The Horse Who Nearly Lost an Eye
Because she is so greedy!
Clementine a pure bred Irish Draft 17hh mare presented one day with a slightly weepy eye, initially thought to be a touch of hay fever and so noted, cleaned but caused no real concern.
The next morning, the eye was completely whited over like a giant cataract and none of the actual iris or pupil was visible. Clementine's face was also very swollen and
puss was running out of her eyes and nostrils. So, the emergency equine vet was called.
Emergency Vet: The vet arrived and on first inspection, thought the issue might be conjunctivitis or uveitis. Alternatively, the wound could also have been caused by a small lesion as the horse had been seen eating the hawthorn bushes the day before.
Clementine was sedated and the eye was treated with anti inflammatories, eye drops and serum drops.
The vet would return every other day for a week to monitor progress. I began offering Clementine Reiki to accelerate healing.

The following day the facial swelling and puss had gone, the white covering had disappeared and the eye itself could be seen. Now the vet could actually see the eye, he identified a foreign body (size and shape of a hawthorn thorn) and a white fibrin on the lens of the eye. In summary, her body was trying to eject this foreign object by sending antibodies to the wound site, but this extra fluid was causing pressure in the actual eye..
The vet warned that the foreign
body would need to be removed. Such a procedure would be very difficult and very expensive requiring a very specialist equine vet and there are only a handful of surgeons in the UK able to perform such a technical operation. The cost would run into the thousands. A more realistic and affordable option would be to surgically remove the eye.

Medication: After the first day, Clementine refused to allow anyone near her eye to administer the medication. She was so difficult and dangerous that the vet advised not to try and force the issue for fear of a human getting injured.
So, from the second day, Clementine was only receiving Reiki as a treatment.

A Week Later: After daily Reiki sessions
the vet returns and is very surprised at the remarkable improvement and found the eye:

"very much better, completely open. Negligible discharge. Pupil shape symmetrical, atropine wore off now. No corneal oedema at all."

"Black suspect foreign body gone. Small less than pin prick sized black spot where black mass was. White fibrin on lens 90% resolved"

The vet although he doesn't fully understand it, he has seen the benefits of Reiki as a complementary tool and has since
recommended my services to other horse owners
which is a huge and very
welcome complement.
I am very pleased to say that Clementine has made a full recovery!
